A Java Development Kit or JDK is a widely used software development environment package, which is used for any or all the software developed with Java as its platform. As it gives a rarely advantageous combination of properties like security, consistency, reliability, and good processing speed, Java is chosen by most of the developers for creating a system application or a web application. JDK is an essential part of creating a functional environment for the Java development process.

All the Java-based Applications and Applets are developed using the JDK. It consists of several software components. One is JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and other tools like java and javac – that combinedly called a development tool. JRE is having JVM (Java Virtual Machine) and other library files. JDK provides a base for all the applications targeted to build on the Java platform. The software contains a variety of tools and utilities, which help to perform a variety of tasks. java: It’s simply a loader that works for all the java applications. Also, this particular tool interprets the class file generated by javac. The single java launcher is used for development and deployment. Gone are the days when JRE was used as the deployment launcher. Nowadays, JRE doesn’t exist with the Sun JDK and totally replaced by this new java loader.

javac: It’s a compiler. And it converts source code into Java bytecode

appletviewer: Through this component, we can run the Java applets without taking the help of a web browser and even debug them.

apt: This is used as an annotation-processing tool

next check: For identifying the conflicts, this next check is used

idle: An IDL-to-Java compiler used to generate Java bindings from the provided Java IDL file

Javadoc: It is a documentation generator, which produces documentation from source code comments, automatically

jar: It is an archiver. Along with related class libraries packages into one JAR file. Also, it manages those files

JavaFX packager: It is a tool to attain packages and sign JavaFX applications

jarsigner: It’s a verification and jar signing tool

java: It’s a stub generator and ‘C’ header that is used for writing built-in methods

javaws: It’s a Java Web Start launcher for JNLP applications

JConsole: It’s a Console used for Java Monitoring and Management

what: It’s a Java Heap Analysis Tool (experimental)

info: It particularly used to get the configuration information from a running Java process

map: It’s an Oracle map which is also a Memory Map. This gives the result of the memory map for Java. On the other hand, it is useful in printing heap memory, or shared object memory maps details of a particular core dump or process.

jmc: It’s known as a Java Mission Control

jps: it’s a JVM Process, Status Tool. It is capable of listing the instrumented HotSpot JVMs on the target system

transcript: It’s a Java command-line script shell

jstack: A tool prints Java stack traces of Java threads

jstat: Java Virtual Machine statistic monitoring tool

keytool: A tool for manipulating the Keystore

Policy tool: Utility that determines the Java runtime. That means it is a policy creation and management tool.

VisualVM: It’s a visual tool. It is integrated with numerous command-line JDK tools.

wsimport: It produces portable JAX-WS artifacts to invoke a web service

xjc: It’s part of the Java API boosting the XML Binding (JAXB) API. After accepting the XML schema, it generates Java classes

With this, the development tools are also available; libraries and aps are available with the JDK. One more major component is JVM, called as Java Virtual Machine provides execution support with any platform.

In this blog, we will discuss what is JDK?

The Java Development Kit is helpful to write programs in Java. It is also known as the Java Platform Standard Edition. JDK is an open-source software provided by Sun Microsystems, now taken over by Oracle, for anyone to use freely for programming.

Do many people have the question, JDK or JRE? So let us look at what each is used for. Java Runtime Environment is required for running programs of Java, whereas JDK is required for writing and running the programs. JDK is a development kit containing JRE and the development tools (debugger and compiler) needed for getting a program output in Java. Simply put, JRE happens to be a subset of JDK; that is, it is included in JDK. Therefore, we will need to install JDK to write and run programs.

JDK has bare minimum requirements for disk space and RAM for the 64-bit Windows platform. It requires around 800 MB disk space to install JDK, as JRE also gets installed along with it. JDK requires 128 MB of memory space to run JDK successfully. This is the minimum RAM required for running basic and small programs, but as the size of an application increases, the memory requirement also increases for the application to run smoothly.

Before installing the latest JDK version, it is recommended to check our systems for any old JDK versions and uninstall them. Though we can have more than one JDK, it is easier to set paths and to work with just the latest one.

Go to the Oracle site and open the Java SE download page. Under the latest version of Java Platform, Standard Edition, click on the JDK download button.

Next, click on the Accept License Agreement button and choose your version of Java for Windows (32-bit or 64-bit) to proceed with downloading the JDK executable file.

In this step, we will be running the executable JDK file (It will be a file with .exe as an extension) once the download is done. This installs JDK as well as JRE. For running this file on Windows, we will need Administrator rights.

To begin the installation, we need to double-click on the downloaded file, and we will be presented with the below window.

Click on Next to proceed with the installation, and follow the Installation guide provided for any queries.

Click on the Close button once the installation has finished.

To recover some of our system’s disk space, it is good practice to delete the downloaded exe file once the download has been done. 

JDK gets installed in the C directory of our system by default having the path “C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11.0”. If we make any change to this path at all, we need to make a note of it as it will be required in the upcoming steps.

We will need to update our system’s Environment variables with our installed JDK bin path to run the Java programs because while executing the programs, the command prompt will look for the complete JDK bin path.

The PATH variable in our system provides the exact location of executables that will be used for running Java programs, such as javac and java. The CLASSPATH variable provides us with the library files' location.

If we do not set the PATH variable, we will specify the full path to the JDK bin every time we run a program.

 For example: C:\> “C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11.0\bin\javac” TestClass.java

So to set these variables, first right-click on My PC and select Properties.

Inside Properties, in the left-side panel, select Advanced System Settings, and here choose the option Environment Variables.

Click on New, and type PATH in the Variable Name, and enter the path of the bin of installed JDK in the Variable Value field.

If we already have the PATH variable, we can edit it by adding it to the existing values.

Click on the OK button to apply the changes.

Open the command prompt and enter the command “java –version”, and if it runs successfully, Java has been successfully installed.

These lines set the JAVA_HOME variable to the correct JDK path and add the JDK's bin directory to the PATH variable. Save the file and exit the text editor.

To ensure that the JDK is properly installed and configured, open a new terminal window or run the following command to reload the .bashrc file:
