Please make sure you have Jenkins admin access to install plugins.

To deploy to a Kubernetes cluster via Jenkins, please follow the steps below:

Install the Kubernetes plugin for Jenkins:

Go to Jenkins > Manage Jenkins > Manage Plugins > Available

Search for "Kubernetes" and select the "Kubernetes Plugin"

Go to Jenkins > Manage Jenkins > Configure System

Scroll down to "Cloud" section and click "Add a new cloud"

Fill in the "Kubernetes URL" and "Credentials" fields with your cluster's information

Scroll down to "Pipeline" section and select "Pipeline script from SCM"

Choose your SCM (Git, SVN, etc.) and enter your repository URL

Under "Script Path", enter the name of your pipeline script (e.g. Jenkinsfile)

Your pipeline script should define the stages of your deployment process

For example, you can have a stage to build your Docker image, another stage to push the image to a Docker registry, and a final stage to deploy the image to Kubernetes.

Here's an example pipeline script for deploying a Kubernetes deployment:

                sh 'curl -LO https://storage.googleapis.com/kubernetes-release/release/$(curl -s https://storage.googleapis.com/kubernetes-release/release/stable.txt)/bin/linux/amd64/kubectl'

                sh 'sudo mv ./kubectl /usr/local/bin/kubectl'

                withKubeConfig([credentialsId: 'kubeconfig-creds', serverUrl: 'https://your-cluster-url']) {

                    sh 'kubectl config use-context your-context-name'

                // Apply deployment and service YAML files

                sh 'kubectl apply -f deployment.yaml'

                sh 'kubectl apply -f service.yaml'

Note: Replace "your-cluster-url", "your-context-name", "deployment.yaml", and "service.yaml" with your own values.

Run your pipeline:Click "Build Now" to run your pipeline
You can monitor the progress of your pipeline by clicking on the pipeline in the Jenkins dashboard


That's it! Your application should now be deployed to your Kubernetes cluster via Jenkins.

How to deploy Kubernetes (K8S) cluster via Jenkins

Explaining the Jenkins sudo password solution:

The error messages usually occur when attempting to run a command with sudo in a Jenkins job or pipeline that requires user input. When you run a command with sudo, you need to enter the password for the sudo user to proceed. However, in a Jenkins job or pipeline, there is no terminal available to enter the password.

To resolve this error, there are a few different approaches you can take:

Use the NOPASSWD option in the sudoers file: By default, sudo requires a password to be entered by the user. However, you can configure sudo to allow certain commands to be run without requiring a password. To do this, you can edit the sudoers file using the visudo command and add a line like this:

jenkins ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /path/to/command

This will allow the Jenkins user to run the specified command without being prompted for a password.

Use the expect command: The expect command can be used to automate the process of entering a password when running a command with sudo. You can create a script that uses expect to enter the password and then run the command. For example:

Use the Jenkins credentials plugin: Jenkins provides a credentials plugin that allows you to securely store and use passwords and other sensitive information in your jobs and pipelines. You can use this plugin to store the sudo password and then retrieve it in your job or pipeline using the withCredentials block. For example:

withCredentials([usernamePassword(credentialsId: 'my-sudo-creds', passwordVariable: 'SUDO_PASSWORD', usernameVariable: 'SUDO_USER')]) {

  sh "echo $SUDO_PASSWORD | sudo -S your_command"

In this example, the usernamePassword method retrieves the username and password from the credentials plugin and stores them in the SUDO_USER and SUDO_PASSWORD environment variables, respectively. The sh step then runs the your_command command with sudo, using the echo command to pass the sudo password to the sudo command.

Use the Jenkins TTY plugin: The Jenkins TTY plugin provides a way to allocate a pseudo-terminal (TTY) for your build job, which can be used to interact with commands that require user input. You can install this plugin and then use the withTTY block in your job or pipeline to allocate a TTY for your commands. For example:

In this example, the withTTY block allocates a TTY for the sh step, which runs the your_command command with sudo. This should allow you to enter the sudo password when prompted.

Use the SSH plugin: If your command can be run on a remote server, you can use the Jenkins SSH plugin to run the command via SSH. This will allow you to enter the sudo password on the remote server. For example:

  sshUserPrivateKey(credentialsId: 'my-ssh-creds', keyFileVariable: 'SSH_KEY_FILE', passphraseVariable: 'SSH_PASSPHRASE', usernameVariable: 'SSH_USER') {

    sh "ssh -i $SSH_KEY_FILE $SSH_USER@remote_host 'sudo your_command'"

In this example, the sshagent block retrieves the SSH key from the Jenkins credentials store and adds it to the SSH agent. The sshUserPrivateKey block retrieves the SSH credentials from the store and stores the username, key file, and passphrase in environment variables. The sh step then runs the ssh command to connect to the remote server and run the your_command command with sudo. You should be prompted to enter the sudo password on the remote server.
